Abstract:
This paper aims to delve into the problems faced by workers with respect to their
work-life balance in the IT sector in Bangalore. In qualitatively contrasting the
perspectives of three levels of workers – junior-level, senior-level and retired
members of firms – nuanced thoughts have been examined to form policy
recommendations which could improve the conditions of workers. Three themes were
key to this analysis – differences in gender, improvement in technology and
importance of skills – for workers in hierarchical work structures. The governmental
objective to improve the ease of doing business and attracting investment was looked
at with reference to the power wielded by firms and governments, and the
shortcomings of current Indian labour law in encompassing these workers and their
relative lack of power in the current scenario.
