Abstract:
his dissertation study explores the role of household dynamics in decisions made
regarding education of children. This study based in rural Gujarat focuses on the
extent to which educational trajectories of children are affected by parental identities
and their livelihood contexts. The study influenced by ethnographic methods explores
the intricacies of social relationships in these rural communities across various social
identities and how it influences their participation in the schooling as well as
socialisation of the child. It also makes an effort to understand the life of the child
inside and outside the classroom. Through this exploration it is able to uncover the
limitations of the Right to Education which now enters its tenth year since enactment.
Responsive policy measures are recommended at the end of the study.
